Citroen Announces DS3 Racing Ahead Of Geneva
Posted 1 10:57:48 AM 1 19 February, 2010
Hot Citroens are back on the menu with this new limited edition DS3 Racing. We're quite taken by the grey and ginger paint job too.
Citroen has announced its hottest hot hatch for ages, with the announcement that the DS3 Racing will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
Sebastian Loeb’s demands for a company car more impressive than the C4 by Loeb have finally been met with the limited edition Citroen DS3 Racing. 1,000 cars will be made, and it goes on sale in the autumn.
Under the bonnet
The Racing DS3 gets a 200hp version of the BMW/PSA-developed 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine, which develops 156hp in more pleb-spec DS3s and 175hp in the MINI Cooper S. Torque is also up from 240Nm to 275Nm for greater flexibility. The mods consist of a higher boost pressure for the turbo, remapped ECU and a tweaked exhaust.
Driving feel
Citroen claims that the DS3 Racing has been developed to be all about driving feel. So to help this, there’s a bespoke setup for the ESP, the front and rear tracks have been widened by 30mm, the car has been...

Vauxhall's New Big Range Extender Concept Car
Posted 1 11:46:44 AM 1 18 February, 2010
Vauxhall's new range extender concept, the Flextreme GT/E, revives the GTE hot Vauxhall name badge. Shame its not as hot as a Mk2 Astra
Vauxhall has revealed the Flextreme GT/E electric range extender concept car that it’ll show off at the Geneva Motor Show. Exciting, no?
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
The Vauxhall, or Opel as it’ll be badged at the show, Flextreme serves two purposes. First is to give us an idea of the way the next generation of Vauxhalls will look, and second is to demonstrate how the Ampera’s electric range extender technology can be adapted for use in a larger car.
Size matters
The Flextreme is about the same size as the current Vauxhall Insignia, albeit with a roofline that’s almost 20cm lower. The concept also has movable aerodynamic blades which manage the flow of air over the back of the car, reducing drag. The low-slung stance and active aero contribute to allowing the concept to achieve an incredibly slippery 0.22Cd drag figure.
Powertrain
Vauxhall is keen to show off the modularity of the electric range extender system which...
VW Polo GTI Unveiled
Posted 1 04:15:23 PM 1 17 February, 2010
We feel a group test coming on - SEAT Ibiza Cupra vs this new VwW Polo GTI vs the soon-to-be-released Skoda Fabia vRS. But which is fastest? Oh wait, they're all the same car. Nuts.
The VW Polo family gets a new member at the Geneva Motor Show with the release of the hot GTI version. Are we excited? Meh.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
The VW Polo GTI has always been a bit like the fourth generation Golf GTI. More of a warmed up standard car with a fancy badge than a proper hot hatch. But will this new one cut the mustard?
Under the bonnet
The engine and gearbox combination is a familiar one – it’s the same setup that’s used in the hottest SEAT Ibizas. So the 180hp four-pot 1.4TSI is couple to the seven-speed DSG as standard, which goes some way to explaining the Polos fairly weighty £18,000 price tag.
Traction aplenty
The Polo also gets the XDS traction control that mimics that effect of a limited slip differential. Although not quite as well. And there’s some stiffer springs and dampers, the former of which lower the car by 15mm.
Design...
Jaguar XKR Speed Pack and Black Pack To Debut At Geneva
Posted 1 01:23:03 PM 1 17 February, 2010
Yep, these Jaguar XFRs are fitted with the new Speed Pack. The white one has the Black Pack too. Not that you'd know.
Yet another Brit manufacturer gets carried away. This time it’s Jaguar with the launch of the fastest XKR ever, the 174mph XKR Speed Pack.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
We’re feeling a bit like the UK’s small but merry band of carmakers have been sharing a few too many real ales recently. Not only do we have a new Lotus Elise to celebrate, and the fastest ever Bentley drop top, we’ve now got the fastest ever Jaguar XKR to add to the list.
Speed merchants
According to Jag, buyers if the current XKR have been a bit narked that their speedy coupes are limited to 155mph. So Jag has responded by developing the optional Speed Pack which lifts to top whack to...
Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible: The Fastest Four Seat Drop Top In The World
Posted 1 01:02:34 PM 1 17 February, 2010
The fastest Bentley drop-top ever, and also the fastest four-seat convertible you can buy. Fact.
Bentley has just announced the car you never knew you wanted – a Conti GT Supersports without a roof that’ll do 202mph. It’s the fastest, most potent drop-top Bentley ever.
Bentley’s Continental Supersports is bonkers. It’s a lighter, faster Conti GT that’s still posh as ever. A bit like a rocket-powered five-star hotel if you will. And now Bentley has extended the Supersports brief to the convertible version, just in time for the Geneva Motor Show.
Powerplanted
Under the bonnet is a 630hp version of the 6.0-litre W12 engine. And while the power figure is impressive, it’s more the 800Nm of torque produced from the just 2,000rpm that’ll really get your attention. Thanks to a 90kg weight drop over the current GTC Speed, 0-62mph now takes 4.2 seconds. Blimey.
In the bends
But the Supersports Convertible isn’t just a dragster that’s scared by corners. Power is now...
Lotus Facelifts The Elise, Or Should That Be Baby Evora?
Posted 1 12:27:47 PM 1 17 February, 2010
Any else with us in reckoning the new Lotus Elise looks a big Ferrari California-esque? Suppose that's what you get when all Lotus' top men are ex-Ferrari.
This is the brand new Lotus Elise, fresh from a plastic surgery appointment. And it looks a lot like its big brother, the Evora, and not unlike the Ferrari California at the front too.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
For the 2011 model year, Lotus has evolved the design of the Elise to fit in with the Evora. So there’s a nice new front clamshell, rear bumper and engine cover; new headlights with very on-trend daytime running lights and some new lightweight wheels.
Add lightness. And more aero efficiency
As it’s a Lotus, this facelift isn’t just because the old Elise’s youthful good looks were starting to sag – the new front end yields a 4% reduction in the coefficient of drag, resulting in better fuel economy.
Engine update
There’s a new engine for the base model Elise too. Lotus has taken advantage of Toyota’s new Valvematic 1ZR-FAE 136hp 1.6 litre engine. The unit gives the same power but a little less torque than the outgoing 1.8-litre unit,...
Nissan Micra Replacement To Debut At Geneva
Posted 1 11:16:19 AM 1 16 February, 2010
The replacement for the Nissan Micra will look a lot like this sketch. Albeit a lot less sketchy and lot more like a very solidly built little B-segment hatch.
Old biddies and learner drivers rejoice, the replacement for the Nissan Micra is upon us. We'll see it first at the Geneva Show, and it goes on sale in the UK this autumn.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
The Nissan Micra has dubious honour of being the car that many people both learn to drive and end their driving career in. And now there’s an all-new one, which will make its glittering debut at the Geneva Motor Show.
V for Victory
Nissan’s ‘new global compact car’ is the first car to feature Nissan’s all new V platform which has been developed to be seriously tough, to cope with any road the globe can throw at it, whilst also being light weight to benefit emissions.
On sale dates
Sales of the new car will begin in Thailand in March, because that’s where the car will be built, with European sales starting in the autumn. And if you’re heading to Geneva, you’ll also be interested to note that the new...
Porsche Panamera V6 Due In The UK In June
Posted 1 10:50:17 AM 1 16 February, 2010
The Porsche Panamera will shortly be available with V6 power. We'll take one in this nice shade of red.
Always fancied a Porsche Panamera but didn't quite like the sound of running a V8? Well here's your answer: the new Porsche Panamera V6, arriving here in the summer.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
The Panamera V6 will be officially launched at the Beijing Motor Show in April, where punters at the show will be able to marvel at its direct injection 300hp, 400Nm V6 goodness. You can have your V6 as a normal rear-wheel-drive Panamera, or a Panamera 4, which has Porsche’s clever 4x4 system. Both cars get the seven-speed PDK with start stop as standard.
Green and mean
The V6 Panamera is actually pretty fuel efficient. The two-wheel-drive car manages 30.4mpg and 218g/km, while the Panamera 4 averages 29.4 mpg and 225g/km. You can opt for 19-inch low rolling resistance tyres which cut CO2 by 5g/km too.
Lightweight stuff
Helping the Panamera’s quest for greenness are the axles, doors, bonnet, wings and the rear tailgate which are all made of aluminium. The V6 is...
5 by Peugeot Concept Previews The New 508
Posted 1 10:42:26 AM 1 16 February, 2010
If you squint a bit, this is the new Peugeot 508, and very nice it is too. It's a hybrid, so it's clean as well as mean.
Yes, this slinky concept car really is a Peugeot, and if you imagine that it with more conventional lights, mirrors and wheels, you’ve got the new 508, due later this year.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
Proof that it wasn’t just a fluke, Peugeot has got its mojo back. Fact. Hot on the heels of the rather decent 3008 and 5008 roads cars, and swoopy SR1 concept car, this is the 5 by Peugeot which previews the forthcoming replacement for both the 407 and 607.
Styling details
The 5 by Peugeot is a little bigger than the 407 and is about the same size as a current Ford Mondeo. We’re fans of the fact that the concept features a sensibly proportioned front grille, instead of the great, gaping ones that grace the front of the current Peugeot range.
Light me up
The LED lights are cool too, but as lights are super-expensive to make, we doubt they’ll make the cut for production. However we hope the car’s rear three-quarter looks...
Honda Civic Type R MUGEN 200 Announced
Posted 1 11:12:39 AM 1 15 February, 2010
Honda's doing its bit to shake off its fuddy duddy image. So that's why you'll be able to buy this nice, youthful MUGEN tuned version from April
Honda has just announced that it’s building 200 special MUGEN-tuned Civic Type Rs. Perfect for the more lead-footed of Honda’s octogenarian customers.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
Honda has finally shifted the remaining units of its last special edition Civic Type R, the Championship White. So to celebrate, here’s another limited run CTR, this time with help for Honda’s tuning partner MUGEN.
Limited numbers
200 MUGEN CTRs will be built, each featuring such luxuries as gloss black door mirrors, 19-inch alloys and plenty of MUGEN badges. Honda must have a job lot of Championship White paint, as all of the specials come in this colour, and all feature a MUGEN bodykit and limited slip diff too. The 201hp engine remains untouched.
MUGEN = AMG
The purpose of this particular edition is to continue where the very special and frankly ludicrously overpriced MUGEN CTR from last year left off and keep building the reputation of MUGEN as Honda’s...

2010 BMW M3 Gets Stop Start And A New Competition Package
Posted 1 09:57:57 AM 1 15 February, 2010
NIce flaps - the 2010 BMW M3 complete with the Competition Package and the optional new carbon fibre bumper flaps
This is the new BMW M3, complete with new Competition Package for more fun in the bends, and stop start, for more time between fill ups.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
Porsche normally gets plenty of flack for launching ‘facelifted’ cars which don’t look any different to the one they replace. But BMW is fast becoming the master of the blink and you’ll miss it facelift.
Puts the B in subtle
Following on from the X5 and 3 Series Coupe, the 2010 BMW M3 has now got – drum roll please – some new rear lights! And that’s about it really. But, as ever, things aren’t that simple.
Two BMW firsts
For the first time ever, the M3 now has Stop Start so you won’t waste any precious super unleaded at the lights. You get this tech on both the six-speed manual and, also for the first time in a BMW, the dual clutch box too, which means the 420hp M3 will return exactly the same 22.8mpg with the manual and...
Hyundai Teases The i-flow Concept, Previews New i40
Posted 1 05:52:54 PM 1 12 February, 2010
So if Hyundai's A-segment car is called the i10, its B-segment car is the i20, and its C-segment motor is the i30, any guesses what its D-segment i-flow concept hints at?
This is the first image of Hyundai’s i-flow concept which previews the firm’s future Ford Mondeo, VW Passat and Vauxhall Insignia rival.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
If you’ve always hankered after a big, cheapo saloon, Hyundai is about to oblige by bringing a new D-segment car to market that’s based on this i-flow concept.
Any more info?
We don’t know much about the i-flow yet –Hyundai is keeping the full details under wraps until Geneva. But what we do know is that it was designed by the firm’s European styling bods in Rüsselsheim, Germany, and that it features the latest incarnation of Hyundai’s ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language.
And the production car?
Using our powers of deduction, the i-flow should manifest itself as an i40 that’s based on the same underpinnings as Kia’s swoopy Cadenza/K7 saloon. Which we don’t get. Boo. More details when we get them.
Citroen Unveils the DS HIGH RIDER Concept
Posted 1 01:56:04 PM 1 12 February, 2010
We reckon Citroen is right back on form with its latest designs - there are shades of the Renault Avantime in the C-pillar of its latest work, the DS HIGH RIDER concept. How super.
This is the Citroen DS HIGH RIDER Concept. But if you imagine it had an extra set of doors, you've pretty much got the new DS4, due later this year.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
Citroën might have given its Geneva Motor Show concept a silly name, but there’s no hiding that the DS HIGH RIDER gives a spangly, glitzy motorshow-ified version of the DS4 that’s due to launch late this year.
DS4 and C4
The DS4 shares its face with the new C4, which will debut at the same time as the DS model. But while the C4 will remain a more conservative hatch, the DS4 will be quite the luxury barge – the poshness gap between the C4 and DS4 will be larger than with the DS3 and C3.
Size matters
In terms of the looks, we’re suckers for Citroëns and the DS4 hits a pretty sweet spot. Despite its beefy, SUV-esque looks, the concept measures 4.26m long, 1.82m wide and 1.48m high, making it a tiny bit smaller than the current Ford Focus.
VW Unveils New Touareg SUV

The new VW Touareg is bigger, more powerful, more efficient and lighter than the car it replaces. There'll be a hybrid too. But until its launch later this year, enjoy watching it rage around in the dunes.

Porsche To Use Williams F1’s Hybrid System In 911 GT3 R
Posted 1 02:57:58 PM 1 11 February, 2010
The Porsche 911 GT3R hybrid seems sensible. But why did they decide to go for a Finding-Nemo-inspired paint job?
This is the hybrid Porsche 911 GT3 R that will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. But why it’s painted the same colour as Nemo the clown fish we’re not sure.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
The Porsche 911 hybrid is four-wheel-drive. As normal, the usual 480hp race-tuned flat six powers the rear wheels. But up front there are two electric motors which develop 60kw each.
Flywheels not batteries
The hybrid system doesn’t use batteries – Porsche doesn’t think the tech is good enough – so instead it uses an electric flywheel power generator that’s mounted inside the cockpit beside the driver.
Push to pass
The flywheel can spin at speeds of up to 40,000rpm and can supply boost to the motors for around six seconds per charge, which is great for quick overtakes or defending a position in a race. The system is charged back up whenever the driver applies the brakes as the motors act as generators.

Kia Ray Unveiled at Chicago Motor Show
Posted 1 12:56:36 PM 1 10 February, 2010
Should you be worried about ray? Not really, but Kia's oddly named new concept car showcases some interesting tech.
This is the Kia Ray. It’s a concept that’s just gone on display at the Chicago Auto Show, and it has absolutely no chance of being built.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
But there’s much more to Ray than being a bit of eye candy to lure punters over to the Kia show stand. The Ray is built on the Cee’d platform and showcases a whole load of Kia’s ideas for what the sustainable car of the future might be like.
Electric Ray
The Ray is powered by a 153hp 1.4-litre direct injection petrol engine. This unit is making its debut in a Kia, but has been seen in a concept Hyundai before. The engine drives the front wheels through a fixed ratio CVT gearbox and is supplemented by a 78kw electric motor.
Ray range
Depending on what you’re up to, the Ray can drive for 50 miles on electric power alone, then the petrol engine kicks in. The total theoretical range is 746 miles at 202.3mpg.

Nissan Juke Makes Its Debut
Posted 1 12:57:00 PM 1 10 February, 2010
We love a car that opens the floodgates of debate. And we reckon it's fair to say that the new Nissan Juke is one of those cars
Brace yourself, this is the Nissan Juke, and represents the firm’s attempt to repeat the success of the C-segment Qashqai, but this time in the class below.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
The Juke gets its name from a move in American Football where you ‘jerk round opposing defenders’. And despite the massively homoerotic overtones that conjures up, it’s just one of Nissan’s ploys to make the car appeal to blokes.
What about that design, eh?
So that’s why it looks just plain mad. It was designed at Nissan’s studio in Paddington, just down the road from iMOTOR Towers, and was inspired by manly things like motorbikes and rally cars from the 60s and 70s. And there’s lots of Nissan DNA in there too, most notably the Micra-esque stance, 370Z-style rear lights and general SUV-ness of Nissan’s larger crossovers.
Is the inside as mad?
Inside, the motorbike influence is more obvious with that high gloss centre console...
Audi's MINI-rivalling A1 is here
Posted 1 04:59:27 PM 1 10 February, 2010
Move over MINI: the Audi A1 will major on premium feel and pose appeal. And it looks quite a lot like a Fiat 500 from the back too.
The Audi A1 is here: it’s cute, it’s cool and it’s customisable and if we were MINI, we’d be pretty intimidated by the new super supermini from Ingolstadt.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
Audi’s new A1 is packed with features designed to lure trendy types out of their MINIs when it goes on sale in the summer. It’s a little bigger than its rival in every dimension, including a more useful boot, and it’s a useful 90kg lighter too.
How about the outside?
The exterior is full of typical Audi design hallmarks from the big bling grille to the sculpted tornado line up the side. Naturally, it’s an Audi so there are plenty of options to chose from, like LED daytime running lights and Quattro 18-inch rims. But unlike any other Audi, as well as the 10 exterior paint colours, you’ll also be able to opt to have the roof arch and mirror caps painted in one of four contrasting shades.

New Volvo S60 Is Built For Speed, Style and Safety
Posted 1 12:56:15 PM 1 10 February, 2010
Not quite as cool as the P1800 used in The Saint, but the new Volvo S60 has got something about it
Although SAAB has being grabbing more than its fair share of the Daim Bar cake news-wise recently, it’s time for the new Volvo S60 to step into the automotive limelight.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
If you’re one of the nice, well-mannered decent sorts, only a Swedish car will do. And from this summer, you’ll have the new Volvo S60 to add into the mix. And it sounds really rather good.
Style on the outside...
We’re not sure if it’s quite stylish enough to live out your fantasy of being Simon Templer in the Saint, but the new S60 is certainly curvy in all the right places. It’s all very Volvo, but the big grille, coupe-esque profile and pert rear are all marks of the new, more confident Volvo.
And on the inside too
Volvo bosses promise that as well as a more striking design, the materials and fit and finish of the interior will be the best it has ever managed. You’ll also get the chance to spec its new top of the range surround sound...
Renault Wind Breaks Cover
Posted 1 12:55:38 PM 1 10 February, 2010
Is Wind really the best name that Renault could come up with? Really?
Renault has just announced the Wind – a Twingo-based two-seater roadster that’ll keep stand-up comics in new material for the next few months.
[See the latest iMOTOR magazine here]
The stand-out feature of the Wind is its roof which owners will doubtless never tire of telling people works the same was as the one on the Ferrari 575 SuperAmerica.
Keep it simple, stupid
Instead of using a big complex multi-piece top which origamis itself into the boot when the sun comes out, the Wind uses a single-piece roof which simply pivots in the middle.
Top down in no time
It takes just 12 seconds to go from broken Wind in the cabin to Wind in the hair – sorry – and thanks to the fact that the roof sits on the rear deck, the boot space remains the same whether the tops up or down. The boot is actually bigger than the one on the Twingo hatch too.
Under the bonnet
Other things to note include the fact that the Wind will...
